Introduction
Hello, and welcome to Not Lost, Just Wandering. We have put together a mapping resource for Charles Dickens’ novel Oliver Twist.
We have created an interactive, multimedia map that shows the location of many of the places that the innocent little Oliver wander to throughout the novel. We have also created a prezi based map that presents a sample of the locations we chose to analyze. We chose to include a prezi as well because it allows us to present both location and time.
After reading this novel we realized that many students may not have a fundamental understanding of the significance of Oliver's constant travelling. It is our firm belief that Oliver is not lost, he is simply wandering to explore the various socioeconomic statuses of Victorian Era England. From the epitome of poverty and deprivation to walking in the shoes of the wealthy, Dickens uses Oliver's constantly shifting path to present readers with a fundamental understanding of how socioeconomic status and location are inevitably intertwined. After realizing this, we created a useful tool to show not only where Oliver travels, but also the deeper, socioeconomic meaning of the locations he elected to wander towards.
It is our prerogative to explain to you the importance of location and how the use of location can deepen the insights to possible underlying meanings of the novel.
The suggested order of using this website is to first view the Prezi to gain an overview of the material. Next, take some time to explore the artifact. If you want to view everything together or read the text more easily, visit the "Artifact Text and Media" page. Finally, finish at the conclusion for to crystallize your understanding of the Geo-spacial and chronological elements of Oliver Twist.
Please enjoy.
